Cleethorpes Community Carnival Parade - a potted history.
The parade has been staged every year since 1976. It had always been a main focus of the summer programme of activities for tourists and the local community alike and at one point was the largest parade of its type in Europe.
Over the years the event has supported many local community groups with donations from the collection, as well as creating numerous arts and community projects through participation.
The parade was first organised by Cleethorpes Borough Council and subsequently North East Lincolnshire Council, but in 2007 the Council decided that they would no longer fund or manage the event. North East Lincs Tourist Forum knew that with a lot of hard work they could get the carnival back on the road and decided to keep it going. A small willing group of volunteers set up a non-profit making Cleethorpes Events Ltd and have managed the event ever since.
Cleethorpes Events Ltd were constantly seeking funding to keep this popular community based event in place as it brings together local organisations, charities and businesses over a 6 month period working together to produce ideas, costumes and floats culminating in the parade. All monies collected during the parade had been shared between participating groups, and the carnival fund itself in an effort to make it sustainable year on year. After much debate it was decided 2012 would be our last parade as funding was getting impossible to find. To our delight Young's Seafood Ltd contacted us with an offer of help. A partnership was formed and Young's Seafood Ltd offered to sponsor the whole event. Providing Cleethorpes Events with new committee members full of enthusiasm to carry
with this successful event.
